*The official trailer for 20th Century Studios and Imagine Entertainment’s “Whalefall” has arrived, offering a first look at an intense survival thriller centered on a young man trapped inside a massive sperm whale.
Directed by Brian Duffield, the film is based on Daniel Kraus’ acclaimed novel of the same name. Duffield and Daniel Kraus co-wrote the screenplay.
Austin Abrams stars as Jay Gardiner, a young man who ventures into the waters off California’s Central Coast following the death of his father, played by Josh Brolin. Jay is searching for his father’s remains when his dive takes a terrifying turn, and he is swallowed by a sperm whale.

Trapped inside the animal with only an hour of oxygen remaining, Jay must find a way out while drawing on lessons his father taught him. The film also stars Elisabeth Shue, John Ortiz, Jane Levy and Emily Rudd.
Duffield reflected on the unusual production experience behind the movie and the work that went into bringing Kraus’ story to the screen.
“To bring Daniel Kraus’ book to life, our cast and crew spent a summer inside a whale inside a sound stage in Studio City, California,” Duffield said. “I can’t wait for audiences to see the performances and hard work everyone put in to tell this thrilling and emotional story in a dark, cozy theater this October.”
“Whalefall” is scheduled to open exclusively in theaters Oct. 16, 2026. Watch the new trailer above.
