*A newly released teaser for “Whalefall” offers a first look at a survival story that unfolds in one of cinema’s most unusual settings. The film centers on a young diver fighting for his life after being swallowed by a sperm whale.
Austin Abrams stars as Jay Gardiner, whose search for his late father’s remains leads him off California’s Central Coast. What begins as a deeply personal mission takes a terrifying turn when a massive whale swallows him whole. With only one hour of oxygen remaining, Jay must draw on lessons left behind by his father as he searches for a way to escape.
Josh Brolin plays Jay’s father in the film, which also features Elisabeth Shue, John Ortiz, Jane Levy, and Emily Rudd. Brian Duffield directed the adaptation and co-wrote the screenplay with Daniel Kraus, whose novel serves as the source material.

While the premise revolves around a desperate struggle for survival, Duffield said the emotional core of the story extends far beyond the whale itself. After learning about the book through a social media post announcing Kraus’ publishing deal, the filmmaker quickly reached out in hopes of adapting it.
Duffield later found a deeper connection to the material while reading it alongside his young son. “I was really excited about the whale stuff, and all the Father Son stuff really was very powerful and painful and all the right ways,” he told Deadline.
According to Duffield, that relationship remains the story’s driving force. He praised Kraus’ work, saying, “The miracle of the book and hopefully of the movie is, when it ends, you primarily are talking about the relationships, and then the whale is third or fourth build.”
“Whalefall” arrives in theaters on October 16, 2026.
