*“The Fast and the Furious” is returning to theaters this summer, and Vin Diesel suggests the anniversary screening may hold added importance for the franchise’s next chapter.
The 2001 action film returns Aug. 21 to mark its 25th anniversary. In an Instagram post promoting the re-release, Diesel hinted that “Fast Forever” will reach back to the story that started the series.
“You will thank God you got to see the First one in the theaters this summer,” he wrote.
Diesel paired that tease with an emotional response to Michael Lesslie’s screenplay for the 11th “Fast & Furious” installment. “I just read the ‘Fast Forever’ script by [Michael Lesslie]. It is the best script I have read in decades,” he wrote. “I am still crying…”

The original movie starred Diesel, the late Paul Walker, Michelle Rodriguez, Jordana Brewster, Rick Yune and Chad Lindberg. It grossed $207 million worldwide on a $38 million budget. The upcoming film will pick up after “Fast X,” which arrived in May 2023 and earned $704 million globally. Its ending left several characters in danger, while two post-credit scenes signaled the returns of Gal Gadot and Dwayne Johnson.
Louis Leterrier will direct “Fast Forever.” His previous credits include “The Transporter,” “The Incredible Hulk” and “Fast X.” He also wrote “Sunrise on the Reaping,” and executive produced “The Rescue” and “Thirteen Lives.”
“Fast Forever” is scheduled to open March 17, 2028.
