*If you saw the story about the TSA requiring clear carry-on bags at airport security checkpoints and started shopping for new luggage, you can put your wallet away. The announcement was an April Fools’ Day prank published by travel outlet Upgraded Points, which later confirmed the story was entirely fictional.
The spoof article, posted on April 1, 2026, described a Transparent Screening Initiative mandating that travelers swap their regular carry-on bags for fully transparent ones before passing through security. According to the fake announcement, the fictional rollout was set to begin at major hub airports over the summer, with a full national expansion planned for 2027. The scheme was supposedly designed to ease congestion at checkpoints by making it easier for officers to spot prohibited items without digging through bags.
The prank went into considerable detail to sell the joke. A fictional TSA agent was even quoted in the piece, saying, “Look, we’re tired. Every day it’s the same thing, people digging through backpacks, pulling out laptops, arguing about water bottles. If we could just see everything in the bag from the start, it would make everyone’s life easier, including the passengers. This works for stadiums, so why not airports?”

The article also named several luggage brands that had supposedly announced clear bag lines to meet the new demand, including Away “The Carry-On Clear,” Samsonite “Checkpoint Ready Collection,” and Travelpro “Crew Transparent Series.”
Upgraded Points later clarified the joke with a note at the end of the story: “While the idea of requiring fully transparent bags at TSA might actually speed up the security process, you can breathe a sigh of relief. This is just a joke as part of our annual April Fools’ Day tradition here at Upgraded Points, and we are hugely appreciative of everything that TSA officers do to keep air travel safe.”
No clear bags required. Your carry-on is safe — for now.
