*There are two types of people in this world: those who see a problem and complain about it on social media, and Tyler Perry. The Atlanta-based media mogul just reminded everyone why he’s in a category all by himself.
While Congress continues its favorite pastime—political chicken with other people’s livelihoods—Perry quietly rolled up to Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport and tried to hand cash directly to TSA workers who haven’t seen a full paycheck in weeks. When the federal government told him he couldn’t do that, he simply pivoted and dropped $250,000 in gift cards instead, according to the Daily Mail. Because apparently, if you want something done right, you call Madea.
The Cash That Couldn’t
Perry’s original plan was straightforward: show up at one of the busiest airports in the world, find the TSA agents who have been showing up to work without pay, and put cash in their hands. It’s the kind of impulsive generosity that would make most of us feel inadequate about our last Venmo transaction.
But the federal government, ever the buzzkill, informed Perry that distributing cash on airport property for security and policy reasons was a no-go. The same government that can’t figure out how to pay its own employees apparently has very strong opinions about how celebrities should go about doing its job for it.

The Gift Card Save
So, Perry pivoted. He returned with $250,000 in gift cards—enough to help approximately 250 TSA officers cover groceries, gas, and other immediate needs while Washington continues to argue over funding bills like teenagers fighting over the aux cord.
“I saw what was happening with these TSA workers who are showing up every day, keeping our airports safe, but not getting paid on time,” Perry said. “I tried to give them cash, but that wasn’t allowed. So I did the next best thing.”
The “next best thing,” for most people, is a strongly worded tweet. For Tyler Perry, it’s a quarter-million-dollar assist that should embarrass every politician who has allowed this funding standoff to drag on.
The Bigger Picture
The TSA funding crisis stems from a broader DHS budget fight centered on immigration enforcement. Essential workers like TSA agents have been required to show up without full pay, leading to financial hardship, increased call-outs, and the kind of airport chaos that makes travelers consider driving.
President Trump signed an executive order on Friday directing DHS to pay TSA employees using existing funds, with paychecks expected as early as Monday. But for workers who have already gone weeks without pay, Perry’s gift cards aren’t just generous—they’re survival.
Were TSA Officers Ordered to Return $1,000 Gift Cards Given by Tyler Perry?
Wait! Not so fast. We can’t verify it, but a travel blogger on YouTube (@travelwiththeharmony) posted the video below. He claims that TSA agents have been calling him and saying that the agency is now demanding that the gift cards be returned, after initially approving the gesture by Perry. If this is true, we’ll leave it to you to figure who is behind the order for the agents to give the cards back.
