*An effort by Tyler Perry to provide direct financial relief to TSA workers during the government shutdown was stopped due to federal restrictions, even as lawmakers worked to restore funding.
According to Men’s Journal, the filmmaker visited Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport on March 26 with the intention of giving money directly to Transportation Security Administration employees. His plan, however, was cut short when it became clear that federal employees are not permitted to accept monetary gifts while performing their duties.
Federal guidelines outlined in regulation 3.101-2 prohibit government workers from receiving gifts or items of value from individuals, with only limited exceptions. The rule states, “As a rule, no Government employee may solicit or accept, directly or indirectly, any gratuity, gift, favor, entertainment, loan, or anything of monetary value from anyone who (a) has or is seeking to obtain Government business with the employee’s agency, (b) conducts activities that are regulated by the employee’s agency, or (c) has interests that may be substantially affected by the performance or nonperformance of the employee’s official duties. Certain limited exceptions are authorized in agency regulations.”
While Perry’s attempt was unsuccessful, reports indicate that some airports have explored alternative ways to collect and distribute donations to TSA staff affected by missed paychecks. The situation has drawn attention to the financial strain placed on federal workers during the prolonged shutdown.
Meanwhile, lawmakers in Washington moved toward a resolution. According to The AP, the Senate approved a funding measure aimed at restoring pay for TSA agents and several Department of Homeland Security divisions, though immigration enforcement programs were excluded from the agreement.
Donald Trump signaled support for immediate payment to TSA employees, citing ongoing travel disruptions. The proposal now awaits consideration in the House, where its path forward remains uncertain.
