*SZA has been candid about her mixed feelings regarding having children. In a conversation with i-D , the 36-year-old singer touched on the topic and reflected on her mother, who had her at age 43.
“She can rest knowing that the mitochondrial DNA of every woman that came before her lives through me,” SZA said of her mom. She added, “I’m bossed up, I’m taking my time. It’s spooky out here — maybe I won’t have kids. Maybe I will. Do I really want the magic and the love to end with me, or is it the end of A KARMIC cycle?”
When SZA appeared on the SHE MD podcast in 2024, she told the hosts that she asked her best friend about co-parenting or fostering a child together. “Well, I asked my best friend if she would do it with me. She said, no,” SZA explained. “Because we have too much on our plate. But I’m going to try to sweeten her up. She’s my bestie, but she’s also the smartest person, so it’s like even if we didn’t end up raising a child together like through a management lens, I’m going to force her to co-parent with me as my fake co-parent.”
SZA keeps her romantic life private and was previously in an 11-year relationship with a former fiancé, whose identity she hasn’t disclosed. In a December interview with Zane Lowe, she revealed her ex-fiancé played a significant role in her early music career.

“[I] really only did music to prove a point,” she said. “When I started making music, it was to my ex-fiancé, because he was paying for everything. My food, my clothes, where I lived — and he was eight years my senior, so I was so codependent.”
For now, SZA continues to reflect on her future, taking her time as she considers whether or not she will become a mother.
