*AI-generated videos are growing so realistic that distinguishing them from genuine clips can be tricky. While there’s no foolproof method to detect AI, experts say paying attention to subtle cues can help.
As Mashable reports, former AI research scientist Negar Kamali explains, “Even if I don’t find the artifact, I cannot say for sure that it’s real, and that’s what we want.” As AI improves, classic signs such as warped faces or mangled textures are becoming harder to spot, making close observation essential.
One of the first things to check is context. Many AI clips use dark or filtered settings to mask glitches. Also, if a video claims to be from a security camera, missing timestamps or brand logos can be a warning sign. Watching the physics is another tip — animals or objects behaving in perfectly repetitive or impossible ways often indicate synthetic content.
Short runtimes are common, as AI tools usually generate clips lasting just a few seconds. “If the video is 10 seconds long, be suspicious,” says UC Berkeley’s Hany Farid. AI clips may also stitch multiple short segments together, which can create subtle inconsistencies.

Audio can provide additional clues. Synthetic videos often have overly clean sound, mismatched noise, or no sound at all. Visual artifacts, like warped or gibberish text on signs, clothing, or packaging, are also giveaways. Look for impossible movements, such as weightless humans or animals, objects changing color, or multiple figures merging unnaturally.
Some AI generators embed watermarks or metadata to identify their work, though these can be cropped or removed. Finally, checking the posting account’s history can reveal AI patterns — many accounts flood platforms with nearly identical clips.
By watching for context, physics, audio cues, visual text errors, watermarks, and posting patterns, viewers can better distinguish real viral videos from AI-generated content, even as the technology continues to advance.
