**UFW loudmouth and Trump baiter Josh Hokit knew that he’d hit perverse paydirt when he shouted after his UFM Freedom 250 win at the White House that “Michelle Obama is a man.” Why Hokit felt compelled to drag Michelle Obama into his victory speech is something even the gods couldn’t explain.
But it had everything to do with the long, relentless pastime that a big swatch of MAGA fanatics has giddily engaged in. That’s slurring Michelle Obama. At times, she’s taken almost as many hits from the Hokit bunch as the former president. And predictably, the best that Trump through a spokesperson could say about the slur was to congratulate Hokit on “a great win.
But Hokit’s idiotic tirade was just the latest in the sordid history of Michelle bashing. It started virtually from the start of Obama’s first term in office. The first in the insult Michelle door was the right-wing website Gateway Pundit that portrayed her as a grotesquely muscular armed Marie Antoinette.
The racist comparison of Michelle to Antoinette was another in the endless knocks that Michelle lived an imperious and luxurious lifestyle, all supposedly at taxpayer expense. This was code language for an African American who’s “uppity.” And if that African American happened to be the First Lady, the fury level soared and the slanders against her flew even hotter and heavier.

The very first salvo against her was an out-of-context remark in which Michelle allegedly questioned her faith in America. This set off bells and whistles that she might be the perfect surrogate punching bag for then-candidate Obama. The Obama campaign sensed the danger and tactfully ensured that Michelle would play the low-key, supportive role in her husband’s candidacy that presidential candidates’ wives traditionally play.
Once in the White House, that quickly changed. She got pilloried for her push of the failed Chicago Olympic bid, and later for uttering a few words on health care reform. Her shopping excursions, her vacation in Spain, and her workout routine all became fodder for political sniping, gossip, and ridicule.
A viral email buzzed around the nets and blogs for a time that pounded her for her high-salaried and top-heavy staff. A British tabloid even engaged in malicious mischief when it claimed that Michelle’s undergraduate thesis, written in 1985 with the hardly incendiary title of “Princeton-Educated Blacks and the Black Community,” was an open call for black militancy.
That fizzled, but the jibes, taunts, and racist cartoons on the blogs and websites never stopped. The aim was to firmly link Michelle in the public’s mind to both the power behind the White House throne and the alleged bad policies of Obama.
A decade after she and Obama left the White House, little had changed. In February 2026, Trump dragged Michelle back to the front line in his near-clinical obsession with Obama. The slur this time was the depiction of the former president and Michelle as apes. Trump defiantly claimed he had nothing to do with it and refused to apologize. The ape video meme of the Obamas sent another tacit signal that Michelle was again fair game for slurs. Hokit happily took the cue.
In the past the rules of political engagement were clear. Presidents were fair game for any and every type of fair or gutter attack. Their wives and families, though, were off-limits. But with the wife of the most politically assailed president in modern times, Trump smashed the rules of the political game. Wives, even wives of former presidents, especially if their name happens to be Obama, can be routinely pilloried. So, Michelle for some, such as a Hokit, will always be an inviting target for racist slanders simply because she is who she is.
