*Lamar Odom is revisiting one of the most devastating moments of his life in a new Netflix documentary, speaking candidly about the night he lost his infant son.
In “Untold: The Life and Death of Lamar Odom,” the former NBA star opens up about the death of his six-month-old son Jayden, whom he shared with his then-partner Liza Morales. According to Basketball Network, the documentary captures Odom recounting the events of that night in painful detail — including the fact that he was out with friends when the tragedy occurred. Jayden passed away in his crib at six and a half months old from sudden infant death syndrome.
“When you get the death certificate, it just says not undisclosed. They give you a word that doesn’t really answer any questions,” Odom said. “The thing about the night that he passed away, I was out all night partying with my man. And the baby was just asleep.”
Odom describes the shock of receiving the call and his struggle to process the news as it came in. The following day, he and his cousin Sherrard went to identify Jayden’s body. “No scars, no hemorrhages, no nothing,” Odom recalled. “Just looked asleep. They say people go through that, it either brings them together and makes them extremely strong, or it brings them apart.”
The loss proved to be more than their relationship could withstand, eventually pulling Odom and Morales apart. The two, who also share children Destiny and Lamar Jr., struggled to hold together amid the weight of unimaginable grief. Odom has spoken openly about the guilt that followed him in the aftermath, haunted by the fact that he was not home the night his son died.
“I should’ve been at home with him. But I was out, doing whatever,” he said. “Early in the morning, I got a call from his mother. She was panicking… she said, ‘Jayden… he won’t wake up.’ The ambulance is here. They’re taking him now. The doctor told me he’s not responding. They said, ‘He’s gone.’ I just saw him. Gone? How the f— is that even possible?”
“Untold: The Life and Death of Lamar Odom” is now streaming on Netflix and explores his basketball career, battles with addiction, and road to recovery.
