*Tyler Perry is shifting the focus of his long-running Madea universe with the release of the first trailer for “Joe’s College Road Trip.” The upcoming Netflix comedy places Joe Simmons at the center of the story for the first time, moving the character out from Madea’s shadow and into a leading role.
Directed and written by Perry, the film follows Joe as he embarks on a cross-country college tour with his grandson B.J. What begins as a practical lesson about adulthood quickly turns into a tense and revealing journey that forces both characters to confront hard truths. The story leans on Joe’s blunt personality while exploring family, responsibility, and growth.
Joe has been a fixture in Perry’s films for more than two decades, often stealing scenes with his sharp tongue and unpredictable behavior. Until now, the supporting character has typically played off Madea. This project reframes Joe as the emotional and comedic anchor of the film.

The cast includes Perry in the title role alongside Jermaine Harris and Amber Reign Smith. Perry also produces the film with Angi Bones, continuing his hands-on approach across all aspects of production. The project reflects his ongoing strategy of expanding familiar characters into standalone stories.
“Joe’s College Road Trip” is the latest addition to Perry’s extensive partnership with Netflix, which has already produced films such as “Mea Culpa” and “A Jazzman’s Blues.” The comedy is scheduled to premiere globally on Netflix on February 13, 2026. Watch the trailer below.
