*Netflix’s latest documentary series, “Sean Combs: The Reckoning,” captured significant attention during its first week of release in December, drawing an estimated 2.28 million minutes of viewing in the United States from December 1-7.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the four-part series ranked second in Nielsen’s streaming charts, behind “Stranger Things,” whose fifth season recorded 4.38 billion minutes watched.
The docuseries, executive produced by Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson and directed by Alexandria Stapleton, details Combs’ career alongside allegations of misconduct, using interviews and archival footage. Combs has criticized the production, calling it a “shameful hit piece” and asserting that “Netflix relied on stolen footage that was never authorized for release.” His legal team issued a cease-and-desist, warning that he would take legal action against unauthorized use and highlighting Jackson as “a longtime adversary with a personal vendetta.”
Stapleton responded, stating, “It came to us, we obtained the footage legally and have the necessary rights,” and noted that Combs was invited to participate but declined. The series presents allegations ranging from mistreatment of women and employees to controversial claims involving The Notorious B.I.G.’s family and Combs’ mother, Janice Combs. Janice dismissed these depictions as “deeply hurtful” and “fabricated,” further calling certain incidents “inaccurate and patently false.”
Those close to Combs have argued that the series was intended to damage his reputation. One insider claimed, “This documentary was made to assassinate his character. It isn’t journalism — it’s entertainment.” Reports suggest the family may seek at least $1 billion unless Netflix retracts disputed material.
Netflix, meanwhile, defended the series. A spokesperson stated, “The claims being made about Sean Combs: The Reckoning are false,” confirming that all footage was legally obtained and insisting that the production was neither retaliatory nor influenced by Jackson. Despite the legal dispute, viewer interest remains strong, making the series one of the platform’s notable releases of 2025.
