*Sean “Diddy” Combs and several relatives are preparing a legal battle against Netflix, aiming for a defamation payout over the four-part docuseries “Sean Combs: The Reckoning.”
The project, executive produced by Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson and directed by Alexandria Stapleton, chronicles Combs’ career alongside a wave of allegations presented through interviews and archived material. Combs claims the production incorporated footage without authorization. He stated, “Netflix’s so-called ‘documentary’ is a shameful hit piece,” insisting that “Netflix relied on stolen footage that was never authorized for release” and arguing that “it is fundamentally unfair, and illegal, for Netflix to misappropriate that work.”
His legal team followed with a cease-and-desist letter, warning the company against releasing the show and emphasizing that “Mr. Combs has not hesitated to take legal action against media entities and others who violate his rights.” They also criticized Netflix’s collaboration with Jackson, describing him as “a longtime adversary with a personal vendetta.” Stapleton responded last week, saying, “It came to us, we obtained the footage legally and have the necessary rights,” adding that Combs was invited to participate but did not engage.
The docuseries also presents a series of accusations about Combs’ past, including claims that he mistreated women, sexually assaulted male employees, and even compelled The Notorious B.I.G.’s family to cover the cost of the rapper’s funeral. Representatives for Biggie’s estate reached out to Media Take Out to dispute that allegation, calling it completely false. The production further suggests that Combs abused his mother, Janice Combs, an assertion her representatives dismissed as “deeply hurtful” and “fabricated.”
Janice further denounced the series as “intentionally misleading” and expressed frustration over depictions of her parenting. “In the documentary, I am portrayed as an abusive parent,” she said, rejecting an accusation about a disputed 1991 incident as “inaccurate and patently false.”
Those close to Combs argue the show was engineered to damage him, with one insider claiming, “This documentary was made to assassinate his character. It isn’t journalism — it’s entertainment.” The family is expected to seek at least $1 billion unless Netflix retracts certain material.
Netflix, however, maintains confidence in the series. “The claims being made about Sean Combs: The Reckoning are false,” a spokesperson stated, per Complex, asserting that all footage was legally acquired and that the production was neither retaliatory nor driven by Jackson.
