“CoComelon” is making the jump to the big screen with SZA, Nicholas Hoult and Ike Barinholtz joining the voice cast of the franchise’s first theatrical movie.
Universal Pictures will distribute “CoComelon: The Movie,” an animated musical adventure from Moonbug Entertainment, Flywheel Media, Prime Focus Studios and DreamWorks Animation. DNEG Group is handling the animation, per the news release.
The story follows JJ, voiced by “Spy Kids: Armageddon” actor Connor Esterson, as he prepares for a major childhood milestone: his first day of kindergarten. That transition quickly becomes an unexpected adventure when JJ discovers his stuffed bear, Boba, is missing. JJ joins Cody, CeCe and Nina on a search that takes them into a magical world controlled by Princess Harmony.
There is one major problem with their new surroundings. Princess Harmony has banned singing.

Grammy winner SZA voices Princess Harmony, while “Superman” star Nicholas Hoult plays Boba. Ike Barinholtz voices Chicken Peels, Harmony’s right-hand enforcer. The supporting cast includes “Saturday Night Live” stars Sarah Sherman and Ego Nwodim. Josh Johnson, Rhys Darby, Matthew Friend and “Ted Lasso” actor Cristo Fernández also lend their voices to the movie.
Music will play a significant role despite Princess Harmony’s unusual rule. The film features 10 original songs, with Grammy-nominated songwriter and producer Justin Tranter serving as executive music producer.
Tranter’s previous credits include collaborations with Selena Gomez, Justin Bieber, Lady Gaga, Dua Lipa, Ariana Grande and Chappell Roan. Kat Good directs the movie after previously working as a story artist on animated films including “Kung Fu Panda,” “Megamind” and “Penguins of Madagascar.”
The theatrical release expands a franchise that has become a major presence in preschool entertainment. Moonbug says “CoComelon” generates more than 4 billion average monthly YouTube views and is available in more than 20 languages across over 80 countries.
The brand has also expanded beyond its flagship series into “JJ’s Animal Time,” “CoComelon Lane,” music, publishing, consumer products and other programming.
