*A first date came to an abrupt end for one Atlanta woman after her date made an unexpected demand before they even stepped inside the restaurant. TikToker N’kya, who posts under the handle @nkyashanay, shared the story in a video that has gone viral, The Mary Sue reports.
According to N’kya, the trouble started at a gas station convenience store the pair stopped at on the way to dinner. Her date asked her to open the door, a request she assumed was a joke. “I thought he was trolling so I opened the door,” she said. “I really thought this man was playing with me y’all.” Any hope that it was a one-time quirk disappeared when they arrived at the restaurant and he stood in place, fully expecting her to do the same thing again.
When she hesitated, he launched into a justification, arguing that covering the bill and handling transportation entitled him to the gesture, invoking the word “king” to describe himself in the process. N’kya had heard enough. She stepped away from the entrance, opened a rideshare app, and left him standing there.

The aftermath brought a fresh wave of bewilderment. In a follow-up video, N’kya shared text messages from the man in which he tied her behavior to her perceived political beliefs. “I don’t even like politics… like I’m so confused rn,” she wrote in the caption.
The clip ignited a wider conversation online. A thread on the r/AskMen subreddit tackled the question of door-holding habits across genders, drawing a range of perspectives. Several commenters viewed the act as a simple social courtesy that anyone should extend to another person. Others acknowledged that while women do open doors for men, it tends to happen less often than when men do it for each other.
A female commenter said she finds chivalrous gestures on dates genuinely refreshing, while one male commenter went the other direction entirely, admitting he prefers to handle things independently and finds door-holding uncomfortable regardless of who is doing it.
