*Mahershala Ali is caught between faith, family, and violence in the official trailer for “Your Mother Your Mother Your Mother.”
The newly released preview offers a first look at writer-director Bassam Tariq’s latest feature, a character-driven drama that follows a grieving father whose search to protect his children forces him into a dangerous conflict.
Ali stars as Latif, a deeply religious hitman trying to reconcile his profession with his responsibilities as a father. After the death of his wife, he sets out across Houston to keep his family safe while confronting personal beliefs that are beginning to fracture under the weight of grief.
According to the official logline, Latif is searching for breast milk for his infant daughter while caring for his teenage daughter and young son when he is unexpectedly drawn into a hit job. The assignment places him on a collision course with influential faith leader Hwan Yoon, played by John Cho, forcing Latif to rely on his community as he wrestles with questions of faith, responsibility, and survival.

The trailer blends emotional family drama with bursts of action, suggesting a story that is as much about personal redemption as it is about life-threatening danger.
The cast also includes Abubakr Ali, Laith Nakli, Tramell Tillman, Tiffany Boone and Giancarlo Esposito, with Adia and Jahleel Kamara portraying Latif’s children.
The film also marks a significant turning point for Ali. In a recent interview with GQ, the two-time Academy Award winner revealed that “Your Mother Your Mother Your Mother” emerged after Marvel’s long-delayed “Blade” reboot stalled.
Ali said he spent more than a year training for “Blade” before the project unraveled, adding that Tariq approached him afterward and allowed him to channel that preparation into a different role.
“I was able to use those skills,” Ali said of joining Tariq’s film.
Tariq wrote and directed “Your Mother Your Mother Your Mother,” which was produced by Lucan Toh, Babak Anvari and Tariq, with Brian O’Neill serving as executive producer. The film opens in select theaters Sept. 25 before expanding to theaters nationwide in October.
