*Elon Musk’s xAI is set to bring a $20 billion data center to Southaven, Mississippi, in what state officials are calling an unprecedented economic investment.
According to ABC News, Governor Tate Reeves revealed that this development represents the biggest private investment Mississippi has ever received, with the facility potentially launching operations within weeks.
The new data center, called MACROHARDRR, will be constructed in DeSoto County close to the Tennessee state line. This will become xAI’s third such facility in the area. xAI Chief Financial Officer Anthony Armstrong stated that these connected sites will collectively create “the world’s largest supercomputer” capable of delivering 2 gigawatts of computing power.

Governor Reeves emphasized the economic benefits, noting the project will create hundreds of full-time positions alongside thousands of additional subcontracting opportunities. He anticipates substantial tax revenue gains that could fund essential public services across Mississippi.
However, the announcement arrives as xAI confronts growing backlash regarding environmental and health impacts from its current Memphis-area operations. The NAACP and the Southern Environmental Law Center have voiced serious concerns about air quality issues stemming from an existing xAI supercomputer facility situated near predominantly Black communities.
Local resistance is also building in Southaven itself. The Safe and Sound Coalition has launched a petition demanding that xAI cease its activities in the community. The organization points to worries about environmental degradation and declining quality of life as primary motivations for their campaign against the tech company’s presence.
