Elon Musk posts about slavery, the internet erupts
*On Dec. 8, Elon Musk jumped headfirst into another culture war firestorm, posting that children should be “proud” that white Westerners ended slavery. He included a video from right-wing historian Brett Pike crediting Britain and other “Anglo-Saxon” forces for abolishing the trade.
The post, now with over 188,000 likes and 13,000 replies, quickly ignited a social media inferno. Critics accused Musk of whitewashing centuries of brutality and conveniently ignoring who industrialized slavery in the first place.
Critics call it whitewashing and historical revisionism
Black media outlets and historians labeled the post “white nationalist adjacent” and deeply misleading. They pointed out that Britain alone trafficked over 3.1 million enslaved Africans—before patting itself on the back for stopping.
One viral reply summed it up:
“Whites ended the slavery they created? Cool story, Elon. Tell it to the descendants still dealing with the legacy.”
Children should be proud that Whites in the West ended slavery worldwide, which had existed for thousands of years

Historians say enslaved people helped end slavery
UK outlets like IBTimes rebutted Musk’s post, noting that abolition was never just a white savior tale. Slave revolts, like the Haitian Revolution (1791–1804), and global resistance movements played massive roles.
It wasn’t just moral awakening—it was about money, revolt, and pressure. As historian Eric Williams argued, Britain dropped slavery when it became less profitable than industrial capitalism.
Users fire back with memes, receipts, and Musk’s own history
Musk’s own past didn’t help his case. Users brought up his South African roots and alleged family ties to an apartheid-era emerald mine. Memes flooded X, with jabs like: “Musk’s family emerald mine says hi,” and “Next up: Elon defends colonialism.”
Others pointed to Musk’s repeated claims that “racism talk” is outdated, even though his own AI, Grok, fact-checked his previous slavery takes as “oversimplified.”

What Musk ignored: abolition was driven by resistance and ideas
While Musk frames abolition as a Western achievement, experts stress that Enlightenment ideas and relentless resistance by enslaved people fueled it. Figures such as Olaudah Equiano and Frederick Douglass helped dismantle the moral justifications of slavery.
International boycotts, revolts, and shifting economics—not racial virtue—forced change. As one reply put it: “No one gets applause for ending atrocities they created.”
Modern slavery still exists—and Musk skipped that part
Critics also slammed Musk for ignoring the fact that slavery isn’t history—it’s a current reality. Forced labor, human trafficking, and bonded work affect nearly 50 million people globally, according to the ILO.
Mauritania didn’t ban slavery until 1981. Even today, supply chains—yes, including tech—can be tainted by modern slavery. Musk’s focus on Western “heroism” feels dated, if not dangerously deflective.

X becomes a megaphone for Musk’s revisionist takes
Musk owns X, the platform where this all unfolded. That makes his posts more than just tweets—they’re editorial decisions. Many users see a pattern: controversial takes get amplified while critical voices often vanish.
Sentiment analysis shows over 60% of replies to the slavery post were negative as of Dec. 11. But Musk’s supporters praised him for being “unapologetically honest,” proving once again that nuance has left the chat.
Why this debate actually matters
At its core, this is about more than Elon Musk being Elon Musk. It’s about who gets to write history—and whose pain gets reframed as someone else’s moral victory.
Telling kids to be “proud” of abolition without acknowledging the atrocities, resistance, and ongoing impact is not just ignorant—it’s harmful. And when a billionaire with global influence spreads that message, the backlash isn’t just expected—it’s necessary.
