*Will Smith has signed a new record deal with SLANG, an independent label headed by music executive Rene McLean, following his BET Awards performance.
According to THR, SLANG’s lineup features Grammy-winning producer-songwriter Camper, hit hip-hop producer 30 Roc, and emerging artists like rapper-singer Leaf, The Underachievers, rapper Truththebull, artist-producer Isaia Huron, and underground rapper RY XP.
“I’m proud to lead SLANG’s efforts to partner with quality artists and invest in their growth, regardless of genre or where they are in their respective careers. In a quickly changing music industry, SLANG artists will be surrounded by a team of like-minded strategists who will stop at nothing to further their trajectory and help them meet their goals. Our commitment to culture comes first, and we consider our SLANG roster family,” McLean said in a statement.
Smith released his debut album, “Rock the House,” in 1987 as part of the rap duo DJ Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince. He later achieved chart-topping success as a solo artist, with his most recent album, “Lost and Found,” released in 2005.
As we reported earlier, Smith debuted his new song, “You Can Make It,” at the BET Awards in June. Collaborating with Fridayy and the renowned Sunday Service Choir, Smith delivered a powerful performance that combined gospel influences with his trademark rap style, encapsulating themes of perseverance and triumph.
In a visually stunning display, Smith rapped against a backdrop of pyrotechnic fire, delivering poignant lyrics that resonated deeply with the audience: “The darker the hell you gotta endure / The brighter the heaven you get to enjoy / The harder the fall, the higher you soar.” These lines emphasized enduring strength and faith in the face of adversity, a message underscored by the fiery stage presence.
Smith has dabbled in music collaborations over the years, partnering with artists like Bad Bunny and Marc Anthony and dropping singles such as “Get Lit” in 2017 and “Light ‘Em Up” with Sean Paul, featured on the soundtrack of his film “Bad Boys: Ride or Die.”
