*Walmart is selling vintage-style heart-shaped cakes, which resemble the ornate, Victorian-inspired pastries popular on TikTok. Although the retailer has sold similar cakes for years, they gained attention around Valentine’s Day for their affordability, with prices ranging from $7 to $25.
Many TikTok users compared these cakes to custom-made versions from independent bakeries, which cost anywhere from $120 to $250. The significant price gap has raised concerns among local bakers, who fear it may affect their businesses.
“guys as an at home baker, the ingredients alone in California cost about $45 for one cake, i use clean ingredients and the process takes me about 6 hours for one cake if all goes well,” one person commented under a video showing a $24.98 Walmart cake. The TikToker noted that they charge at least $144 for a similar cake.
A now-deleted video from TikToker @birdysbakery shows the baker criticizing the affordability of Walmart’s cakes while decorating a heart-shaped one.
“What is actually grinding my gears here are the people in the comments under videos advertising the cake, complaining about what home bakers are charging for vintage heart cakes,” the content creator said in the clip, NBC New York reports.
@r7_phantomm I’m in awe with how beautiful this cake turned out! For only $25!! @Walmart ??? • • • #viral #walmart #heartcake #foryou #fypage #fyp #bakery #buttercream #walmartcustomcakes #customcakes #valentines #vintage #vintagecake #cake #cakedecorating ♬ original sound – Kardashian clips ?
“I just find that highly disrespectful to everybody who put so much time and effort into their cakes, especially when having a birthday cake is a luxury, it is not a need,” they add.
The video, which stirred debate on TikTok, alleged that Walmart’s cakes use lower-quality ingredients, are mass-produced in warehouses, and lack the craftsmanship of small bakeries.
