*Viola Davis is stepping into uncharted territory with her latest role in the action-packed thriller “G20,” streaming on Prime Video starting April 10.
Davis takes on the role of U.S. President Danielle Sutton in this high-octane, White House Down-esque film. When the “G20” summit is attacked, her character becomes the prime target, dodging assailants and proving she’s no damsel in distress—pushing the Secret Service aside to save herself, her family, and world leaders.
In an interview with The Times of London, the Oscar winner addressed her pivot to an action-hero role, pushing back against the expectation that every project must chase awards. “I don’t think every movie you do has to be considered for an Academy Award. I wanted to do something that families could watch together, something popular.”
After years of intense, dramatic roles, she craved a change. “But internally you’re always trying to get back to the fun,” she explained, welcoming the chance to star in what The Times called “an ass-kicking American president.”
Davis, joined by co-stars Anthony Anderson, Marsai Martin, Ramón Rodríguez, and Antony Starr in the film, sees “G20” as a personal milestone.

“The only two people you owe anything to are your six-year-old self and your 80-year-old self,” she told The Times, adding that embodying a full-blown action hero “made six-year-old Viola squeal.”
Directed by Patricia Riggen and written by Caitlin Parrish, Erica Weiss, Logan Miller, and Noah Miller, the film blends thrills with a populist appeal. Produced by Andrew Lazar, Davis, and Davis’ husband, Julius Tennon, “G20” promises an adrenaline-fueled escape.
