*Halle Berry’s recent revelation that she turned down a marriage proposal from longtime partner Van Hunt has ignited a fresh conversation about the role of marriage in modern relationships, with Tyrese Gibson stepping into the spotlight to weigh in.
As Complex reports, on Thursday (June 5), Tyrese took to Instagram to react to Berry’s decision, using the moment to question the traditional framework of commitment. “Is the institution of marriage dead?” he asked in a candid caption.
Calling Berry a “sister” and a close friend, Tyrese continued by sharing his thoughts on the emotional toll marriage can take. “Can we ever get to a place where we feel WHOLE in a relationship and feel like you are truly in love and HAVE your PERSON without marrying them when marriage in itself has caused so much trauma and pain?” he wrote.
His reflection is grounded in personal experience. The singer and actor has been married twice, first to Norma Mitchell, with whom he shares an 18-year-old daughter, Shayla, and later to Samantha Lee, the mother of his 6-year-old daughter, Soraya. Referencing the ongoing custody battles from his second marriage, Tyrese added, “It’s really hard and very fragile, and UBER sensitive to have conversations about getting married when we all look forward to the ultimate level of love and yet a chosen few of us have had loved almost kill us….”
The conversation was sparked by a moment from Today with Jenna & Friends, where Hunt revealed that he had proposed to Berry. “So I put out the proposal, and it’s still on hold as you can see,” said Hunt, who has been with Berry since 2020. He jokingly added, “It’s just out there floating. You know, maybe you can encourage her.”

Berry offered her perspective, referring to her marital history. “Well, I’ve been married three times,” she said. “Van has been married once, and so no, we don’t feel like we have to get married to validate our love in any way. We don’t.”
Still, she left the door open for future possibilities, saying Hunt is “the person I should have married” and suggesting a wedding might happen “soon.”
Berry shares an 11-year-old son, Maceo-Robert, with ex-husband Olivier Martinez, and a 17-year-old daughter, Nahla Ariela Aubry, from a previous relationship with Gabriel Aubry. The Oscar winner was previously wed to ex-MLB star David Justice from 1993 to 1997 and to R&B crooner Eric Benét from 2001 to 2005.
