*Earlier this year, Tyler Perry announced his latest film, Finding Joy, starring P-Valley’s Shannon Thornton. The announcement caught fans’ attention immediately, not just because it’s a Tyler Perry project, but because it promised something different: A modern holiday love story about rediscovering yourself when life doesn’t go as planned.
Finding Joy follows Joy, a talented New York fashion designer who feels overlooked in both her career and her love life. Her boss takes credit for her ideas, her dating life is nonexistent, and she’s just stuck. She decides to go on a holiday getaway with her potential new boo, and that’s when everything changes.
What was supposed to be a fun getaway quickly turns into an unexpected adventure when a snowstorm leaves Joy stranded far from home. But as luck or fate would have it, she crosses paths with Ridge, played by Tosin Morohunfola. Their meeting is awkward, funny, and just the right amount of romance.

If you are a fan of Tyler Perry, you know he has done romance before, but this one feels more grounded, more personal. Shannon Thornton brings a vulnerability to Joy that makes her easy to root for. I spoke with Shannon about her character Joy. Here is what she had to say. “I think what I love bout Joy. Even though she has been unlucky in love. She seems open still and optimistic, and I love that, said Shannon Thorton.
Visually, the movie gives you all the holiday feels. Snowy mountains, cozy cabins, and that classic Tyler Perry mix of laughter and reflection. But what stands out most is the message. Joy isn’t only something you find within yourself; it’s something you can discover through others.
Tyler Perry balances the heartfelt moments with humor, and the cast’s chemistry makes it believable. “When we were off, the entire cast would hang out, and that’s how we bonded. We had this rapport where we could just joke around with each other. So it just felt very natural, said Shannon Thornton when asked about the cast chemistry.
This film isn’t just a love story; it’s about starting over, embracing change, and letting go of what you thought your life was supposed to be.
Finding Joy is streaming now on Prime Video.
