*Travelers often pack extra underwear to prepare for unexpected mishaps, like spills or sudden periods, as humorously captured in a TikTok audio: “But what if you s–t your pants? What if you s–t your pants every single day?”
As the New York Post reports, Amanda Parker, a travel expert from Netflights, explained to Travel + Leisure, “The majority of travelers overpack underwear as it gives them a sense of comfort and reassurance.” She notes that this habit stems from a need for control during unpredictable travel scenarios.
To avoid overstuffing luggage, Parker offers a simple packing rule. “The ultimate hack you need to know when it comes to packing is that you need to pack three pairs of underwear more than the number of days of your holiday,” she said. “That’s the sweet spot! So if you’re going away for five days, pack eight pairs.” She added, “The extra three act as your safety net, without overpacking and stuffing your suitcase,” ensuring coverage for sweaty travel days or spontaneous activities.

Meanwhile, Tracee Ellis Ross shared a contrasting approach at the Travel + Leisure World’s Best Summit in New York City on July 15. “There’s always one bathing suit, a flip flop and one little dress I can roll up. And there’s always two undies,” the 52-year-old “Black-ish” actress told the audience. When editor-in-chief Jacqui Gifford questioned, “Two undies, that’s it?” Ross described washing them in a hotel sink with shower gel or soap, using one sink for washing, another for rinsing, and drying them on a towel rack.
Ross later clarified the online buzz via Instagram, stating, “This is hilarious. I pack two pairs in my carry-on… in case my luggage doesn’t make it.”
She explained, “If I’m gone for a month on this trip, you can’t pack a month’s worth of underwear. How do you do that? They take up a lot of space.”
Her comments, made while promoting her Roku series “Solo Traveling with Tracee Ellis Ross,” which premiered July 25, highlight a minimalist strategy that contrasts with Parker’s formula but prioritizes practicality.
