*When you think of a Tyler Perry film, you often expect heartfelt moments, humor, and a touch of drama. But his upcoming film, Finding Joy, starring Shannon Thornton and Tosin Morohunfola, takes things a step deeper.
Shining a rare light on the emotional struggles men face when it comes to life, love, and vulnerability.
Morohunfola plays Ridge, a character who at first seems like your typical romantic interest. Charming, confident, and attractive. But as the story unfolds, Tyler Perry peels back those layers, revealing a man wrestling with his own trauma and grief.
Ridge isn’t just there to “save” Joy, played by Thornton; he’s trying to save himself, too. And that’s what makes his portrayal stand out.

Tyler Perry has always had a gift for exploring human emotion, but in Finding Joy, he gives space to something we don’t often see on screen. A Black man navigating his mental and emotional health in an honest way. Ridge is dealing with past disappointments, pressure to appear strong, and the quiet loneliness that often comes with being the person everyone else depends on. Through his journey, Tyler Perry highlights how men are taught to suppress their feelings, even when they’re breaking inside.
Morohunfola brings a quiet intensity to the role. His performance doesn’t rely on grand gestures or heavy monologues. Instead, it’s in the small moments. It’s the kind of performance that makes you reflect on the silent battles men fight daily. I spoke with Tosin about his character’s vulnerability. Here’s what he had to say.
“I thought he was an enigma; he had so many shells and so many walls up. I think a lot of men can relate to sometimes you need to have a guard up because the world is hard out there, or people don’t hold space for your feelings. It’s kind of a beautiful journey for him to come to a place where he realizes he can let some of that down,” said Tosin Morohunfola
What makes Finding Joy special is that this film doesn’t romanticize Ridge’s pain; he humanizes it. He shows that healing and love aren’t separate journeys; they often happen side by side.
Through Ridge, the film reminds audiences that men deserve grace, space, and softness too. This isn’t just a love story between two people. It’s also a love story between a man and his healing. And in today’s world, that’s a message worth celebrating.
Finding Joy is streaming now on Prime Video.
