A powerful new documentary, “The Debutantes,” premiered today, May 1, on Comcast’s Black Experience on Xfinity and Xumo Play. Directed by Emmy-nominated filmmaker Contessa Gayles (Songs from the Hole) and executive produced by Emmy Award-winning actress Sheryl Lee Ralph (Abbott Elementary), the film follows a group of young Black women in Canton, Ohio, as they bring new life to a long-lost tradition: the debutante ball.
Filmed during the 2022 Debutante Cotillion, the documentary captures the first cotillion in Canton in over a decade. “The Debutantes” dives into the lives of high school juniors and seniors as they take waltz lessons and etiquette classes, activities once viewed as symbols of middle-class respectability, while confronting the cultural expectations and economic realities of a post-industrial town, per the news release.
“The debutante ball now presents a new generation of Black girls, many from a post-industrial, low-income community, with the challenge of deciding how much of this legacy to embrace as they navigate traditional pathways to advancement and success,” the film’s release notes.
“As a former debutante, I am beyond thrilled to be part of The Debutantes, a film that beautifully captures the grace, tradition, strength, and resilience of young Black women stepping into their power,” said Sheryl Lee Ralph.

Gayles said her goal was to “create an intimate portrait of Black girlhood that celebrates the complexities and nuances of our experiences as we navigate our way to adulthood.”
“With the resurrection of the traditional rite of passage of the cotillion, the film becomes an intergenerational dialogue among Black women and girls at the intersection of race, class and gender,” Gayles added.
Now streaming, “The Debutantes” is available exclusively on Comcast’s Black Experience on Xfinity (channel 1622 or via voice remote) and on the free, ad-supported Xumo Play app. The film is a co-production between NBC News Studios, BET Studios, and Westbrook Studios, in partnership with deNovo Initiative and Cocomotion Pictures.
