*Google has released “The Art of Possible,” a documentary honoring the remarkable career of Dr. Marian Croak, whose inventions have quietly shaped the way the world communicates.
The film arrives during Women’s History Month, observed March 1 through March 31 under the theme “Leading the Change: Women Shaping a Sustainable Future” — a fitting backdrop for a story about a woman who refused to accept limitations.
Dr. Croak is the architect behind Voice over Internet Protocol, better known as VoIP, the foundational technology that powers every internet-based call made today. Every Zoom meeting, WhatsApp voice note, and FaceTime conversation traces its roots back to her work. Early in her career, skeptics dismissed the internet as a passing novelty, but Dr. Croak pressed forward and built what would become the backbone of modern global communication.
Her impact extends well beyond VoIP. In the wake of Hurricane Katrina, she invented text-to-donate technology, a tool that has since generated billions of dollars for disaster relief and humanitarian efforts around the world. She holds more than 200 patents and stands as one of the first two Black women inducted into the National Inventors Hall of Fame. Most recently, she was awarded the 2026 IEEE Founders Medal, one of the most prestigious honors in the engineering field.

Today, Dr. Croak serves as Google’s VP of Human Centered AI and Foundational ML, where her focus has shifted to ensuring that artificial intelligence is developed responsibly and ethically. The documentary traces the full arc of her journey, highlighting the family members, mentors, engineers, and collaborators who shaped her path along the way.
“The Art of Possible” blends traditional filmmaking with Google’s Veo technology to reconstruct moments where archival footage was unavailable. The film features interviews with Google leaders including James Manyika, SVP of Google/Alphabet, and Melonie Parker, VP of Employee Engagement, alongside scientists and engineers whose work has been directly influenced by Dr. Croak’s innovations.
