*The anticipation is building as “Surface” prepares for its season two premiere on Apple TV+ on Feb. 21, and EURweb had the opportunity to talk with the stars to discuss what viewers can expect from this next chapter.
The new season follows Sophie (played by Gugu Mbatha-Raw) on her journey to London, where she’s determined to uncover the truth about her past. Armed with stolen resources, Sophie infiltrates British high society after an injury that stripped her of her memories. The plot thickens when a journalist unexpectedly contacts her, revealing they previously worked together to expose a scandal involving her new social circle.
Coming off an intense first season that left viewers on the edge of their seats, Sophie’s story takes a bold turn. After faking her death and leaving her previous life behind, she’s now returning to her roots – a decision that promises to unveil even more layers of her complex past. One of the season’s most anticipated storylines delves into Sophie’s relationship with Eliza (played by Millie Bradley). The mysterious connection between these two characters, which was merely hinted at in season one, moves front and center in the new episodes.
“We were really fortunate that Veronica West, our showrunner, gave us both an overview of where the season was going and the relationship between Eliza and Sophie in their past,” Mbatha-Raw says. “It’s been really amazing to actually play it through now that we’re in the second season, we’re in London.”

“When you have a close relationship off screen as well and there’s real trust between two people, especially when there’s so much intimacy in those scenes and pain and history, I think it makes it so much easier,” Bradley says. “You can see it when characters have that connection off screen as well.”
The new season introduces the Huntley family, bringing their own web of dark secrets into the mix.
“We have a fully fleshed family with all their dark secrets to play with,” Mbatha-Raw says, hinting at the drama to come.
The London setting adds a new dimension to the story, taking viewers into the world of British elite society where appearances can be deceiving. Fashion enthusiasts will be pleased to know that Sophie’s impeccable style continues to make statements in season two.
When asked to describe season two in one word, Mbatha-Raw chose “impulsive,” while Bradley opted for “sexy” – suggesting viewers are in for an intriguing ride that combines psychological suspense with romantic tension.
