*At a pivotal moment for South Carolina State University, strong leadership and responsible stewardship are shaping a new chapter for the University’s Foundation.
At the center of this progress is Stephen Beatty, Board Chair of the South Carolina State University Foundation, whose vision and commitment to accountability are redefining how institutional foundations support student success, strengthen donor trust, and ensure long-term sustainability.
Over the past two years, the Board of Directors of the South Carolina State University Foundation has charted a deliberate course toward excellence built on measurable objectives, transparency, and strict compliance.
Under Beatty’s leadership, the Foundation has enhanced its financial systems and strengthened its governance practices, including fiduciary standards, donor reporting measures, and conflict of interest requirements.

These efforts are positioning the Foundation to rise among the premier college and university foundations across the country.
“We have been intentional about improving every aspect of our operations,” said Beatty. “By strengthening our financial controls and governance framework, we are demonstrating what purpose-driven stewardship looks like when accountability and student outcomes guide every decision.”
Beatty emphasized that the transformation underway is the result of a shared commitment among the Board and staff to elevate standards and reinforce trust.
Accountability and transparency, he noted, are essential to delivering meaningful results for students and honoring the confidence of donors and partners.
The Foundation’s recent four-star rating reflects this progress and the success of a strategy already in motion.
According to Beatty, the recognition did not prompt a new fundraising approach, but instead validated the work being done to expand and strengthen the Foundation’s donor ecosystem.
“We have been on a successful journey that continues to strengthen donor confidence,” Beatty said. “Through improved accountability and engagement efforts, we are seeing increased giving from both new and existing donors, including alumni and corporate supporters.”

As the Foundation prepares for its 35th Annual Scholarship Gala and Tribute, Beatty reflected on the importance of the event, which has become the organization’s signature fundraiser.
What began as a small gathering to help offset the economic challenges many students face has grown into a major convening that unites alumni, donors, and community partners in support of scholarships.
“As we approach this year’s Gala in April, we are encouraged by the growth in scholarship funding and inspired by the stories we continue to hear about the achievements of our students and alumni,” Beatty said.
The impact of the Gala extends far beyond a single evening.
Scholarship support generated through the event helps reduce the financial burden for students balancing academics, work, and family obligations.
Beatty noted that the results are evident in improved retention and graduation rates, as well as expanded access to academic and professional opportunities.
“The impact is real,” he said. “This event remains a cornerstone of our efforts to remove financial barriers and elevate student success, and we are confident this year’s Gala will continue that legacy.”

Looking ahead, the Foundation is continuing to strengthen its infrastructure and long-term sustainability.
A newly established relationship with Morgan Stanley is enhancing investment management practices, reinforcing risk oversight, and ensuring careful stewardship of donor resources.
In addition, the Foundation has strengthened financial controls and audited statements, increased transparency in reporting processes, improved governance standards through revamped board committees, established performance metrics tied to operations and program impact, set higher standards for fundraising and investment activities, and reaffirmed its commitment to donor trust and strong governance practices.
“We have no intention of slowing down,” Beatty said. “We will continue to evolve to meet the needs of the University we serve.”
As the Foundation looks to the future, there is a continued focus on ensuring the Board reflects deep expertise in areas such as finance, real estate, philanthropy, governance, external relations, and student success.
Flexibility remains central to the Foundation’s strategy, allowing it to respond effectively to both immediate and long-term needs.

With a clear focus on accountability, transparency, and excellence, Stephen Beatty and the South Carolina State University Foundation are building a strong and sustainable future.
Their work ensures the Foundation remains firmly aligned with its mission to deliver best-in-class results in support of South Carolina State University’s students, its donors, and its proud alumni.
