*Sheryl Lee Ralph marked her 20th wedding anniversary with Pennsylvania state senator Vincent Hughes through a vibrant vow renewal on the iconic Rocky Steps at the Philadelphia Museum of Art.
What began as a plan for a small gathering grew into a 250-guest celebration, largely due to Hughes’ enthusiasm. “My husband has turned into groomzilla, and his list is twice as long as mine,” Ralph told Vogue.
The couple, married since 2005, has maintained a long-distance relationship, with Ralph based in Los Angeles and Hughes serving Pennsylvania’s Seventh Senatorial District.
“I wasn’t at a place where I was willing to give up my career, but I also didn’t want to give up having a stable relationship,” Ralph said, crediting their success to communication and therapy. She added, “When Beyoncé says, ‘You put my love on top,’ he put my love right on top, top, top.”
For the vow renewal ceremony, Ralph made a grand entrance, draped in an 80-foot shawl. “How could I walk up all of those steps without leaving a trail of something for everybody to look at?” she said.

Choosing the Rocky Steps, famed from the 1976 film “Rocky,” reflected the couple’s resilience. Ralph connected deeply with the movie’s message: “It ain’t about how hard you hit, it’s about how hard you can get hit and keep moving forward.”
The ceremony embodied their enduring bond amid life’s challenges. “In marriage, we have so many things that happen in life,” Ralph noted, emphasizing the importance of perseverance through change.
The event, held in August 2025, celebrated their unconventional yet steadfast love story.
