*Shaquille O’Neal once made a shopping trip so massive it caught even American Express off guard.
Shortly after being traded from the Miami Heat to the Phoenix Suns, O’Neal arrived in an empty apartment and decided to stock up on everything at once.
“I have the biggest purchase in Walmart history — $70,000. I got traded from Miami to Phoenix, and I’m the type of guy with no patience. When I got to Phoenix, they had an apartment for me — nothing in it,” O’Neal told “The Late Late Show.”
Shaq’s shopping spree included multiple carts full of electronics, clothing, and household items, yet his credit card was declined twice when he tried to check out. When the company called him, they said, “‘Hey man, somebody stole your credit card and spent $70,000 at Walmart,’” O’Neal recalled. “I said, ‘No, that was me.’”

Once verified, the purchase became Walmart’s largest single transaction, holding the record for 17 years. In 2024, YouTube creator SteveWillDoIt surpassed it, inspiring other online personalities to attempt similarly massive shopping sprees.
Meanwhile, we reported earlier that O’Neal has been promoted to Chief of Community Relations for the Henry County Sheriff’s Office, marking a new chapter in his ongoing public service work in North Georgia, according to CBS News.
The promotion was revealed live during ESPN’s Christmas edition of “NBA Tip-Off” by Henry County Sheriff Reginald B. Scandrett. O’Neal has worked with the sheriff’s office for nearly five years, contributing to a wide range of outreach efforts across the county. Sheriff Scandrett credited the NBA icon with helping expand the department’s reach and deepen engagement with residents.
“Since then, we have done tremendous things in the community,” Scandrett said. “We’ve touched about 370 events, reached about 42,000 people, and fed over 14,000 children. He’s been at the helm of that.”
