The R&B crooner had been pulled from the general population last month after a routine inspection of his cell took an unexpected turn. What officers found during that inspection was a notebook containing contact information for a retired warden. The discovery set off an internal investigation and resulted in Kelly being moved into the Special Housing Unit while the facility worked to determine the circumstances surrounding the number’s presence among his belongings.
Throughout the process, his lawyers insisted the retired official had an entirely benign connection to Kelly, describing the person as someone who had taken on a mentorship role. Attorney Beau Brindley addressed the findings with Los Angeles Magazine, making clear that the review had produced nothing damaging. “No impropriety whatsoever was found with respect to his possession of the telephone number of a former prison official,” Brindley said.

He also took aim at the decision to isolate Kelly in the first place, stating, “He was kept in special housing for approximately two weeks without legitimate cause before the facility was compelled to release him.” Images have since circulated showing Kelly back among other inmates.
Kelly has been incarcerated since facing back-to-back convictions on racketeering and sex crimes charges. The first verdict delivered in New York in 2021 and the second handed down in Illinois two years later. Those combined cases resulted in a 30-year prison term that he is currently serving.
