*R. Kelly is under investigation at his federal prison facility in Butner, North Carolina, after officials discovered he possessed the personal phone number of a retired warden, leading to his placement in solitary confinement while the probe continues.
The disgraced R&B singer, who is serving a 30-year federal sentence for racketeering and sex trafficking, was moved to the Special Housing Unit — commonly known as the SHU or solitary confinement — at FCI Butner Medium I, following a routine cell search, his attorney confirmed.
How R.Kelly’s Solitary Confinement Started
Kelly’s lawyer, Beau Brindley, told TMZ and People magazine that the situation stems from Kelly’s participation in a prison mentor program designed to help guide other inmates. The program was overseen by a warden or prison official who, before retiring, gave Kelly his personal cell phone number so the singer could reach out for advice about the program if needed.
“The only reason for having the phone number or contact with that prison official is because he was involved in a mentor program at the jail,” Brindley told People. “And so he’s involved in a mentor program, and because of that, he has a relationship with the prison official. That official retired and left the phone number for Mr. Kelly, and then, as a result of that, now Mr. Kelly’s locked up in special housing, for what they call an investigation.”

Discovery During Cell Search
According to reports, the number was found written in Kelly’s notebook during a search of his cell. The search was triggered after Kelly’s cellmate was caught with a contraband mobile phone, which is illegal in federal prisons. Officials discovered the notebook containing the retired official’s number during that sweep.
Brindley insisted the situation is benign and tied only to the mentor role, with no evidence of wrongdoing such as attempted contact being publicly alleged.
Conditions in Isolation
Brindley described the conditions as harsh, with Kelly losing access to commissary, outside contact and other privileges during the investigation.
Kelly is “in isolation” simply for having the phone number of a retired prison official, the attorney said.

Prison Rules and Security Concerns
Federal prison rules strictly prohibit unauthorized contacts or potential security risks, especially for high-profile inmates. Possessing an ex-official’s personal contact information could be viewed as a violation — potentially for improper communication or as a security breach — even if innocently obtained.
No official statement from the Bureau of Prisons has been detailed in public reports, as these internal matters are often kept low-profile.
Current Status
As of Feb. 17, 2026, the internal investigation is ongoing. Kelly remains in the SHU for the duration. This incident does not affect his overall sentence; he has a projected release date around 2045.
The story broke via TMZ on Feb. 16, 2026, and was quickly picked up by People, Complex, XXL and other outlets. Brindley has framed it as an overreaction or unfair punishment for a legitimate program-related contact.
No Escape Involved
It should be noted that Kelly absolutely did not manage a prison escape, despite the recent resurfacing of repeatedly debunked viral claims purporting otherwise. The investigation centers solely on the phone number discovery.
Background
Kelly, 59, was convicted in 2021 on federal racketeering and sex trafficking charges after a six-week trial that detailed decades of sexual abuse against young fans and aspiring singers. He is serving his sentence at the Butner facility, which has housed other high-profile inmates.
The investigation continues, with no timeline given for its resolution.
