*In a chilling return to the horror genre, Al Pacino stars alongside Dan Stevens in “The Ritual,” a haunting exploration of faith, doubt, and demonic possession set to captivate audiences on June 6. Directed by David Midell and distributed by XYZ Films, the film promises a gripping narrative inspired by real events, diving deep into the psychological and spiritual battles faced by two priests tasked with saving a young woman.
The story centers on Father Theophilus Riesinger, portrayed by Pacino, and Father Joseph Steiger, played by Stevens. The duo must navigate their personal struggles, one grappling with a wavering faith, the other haunted by a troubled past, to perform a series of perilous exorcisms on Emma Schmidt (Abigail Cowen), a young woman believed to be possessed. The film draws from the 1935 book “Begone Satan!,” which chronicles the real-life case of Emma Schmidt, a widely discussed figure in American media due to her alleged possession.
“We are the Lord’s army in this battle,” Pacino’s character declares in the trailer, emphasizing the spiritual stakes. Yet, Stevens’ character questions, “What if what she really needs is a doctor?” prompting Pacino’s sharp rebuke: “We are paying a price for your lack of faith.”
Joining Pacino and Stevens are Ashley Greene as Sister Rose, Patricia Heaton as Mother Superior, and Ritchie Montgomery as Chester, with additional performances by Maria Camila Giraldo, Emily Brinks, and others.
Midell co-wrote the screenplay with Enrico Natale. The production team includes Natale, Ross Kagan Marks, Andrew Stevens, and Mitchell Welch, with BondIt serving as executive producer.
For Pacino, “The Ritual” marks his second venture into horror following the 1997 hit “The Devil’s Advocate.” His recent roles in “Modì: Three Days on the Wing of Madness” and “House of Gucci” showcase his enduring versatility, while Stevens brings fresh energy from 2024’s “Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire” and Abigail.”
With its blend of psychological tension, spiritual conflict, and a stellar cast, “The Ritual” is poised to leave audiences questioning the boundaries between faith and fear. Watch the trailer above.
