*Netflix has made an unusual move by acquiring InterPositive, an AI filmmaking startup co-founded by actor and filmmaker Ben Affleck.
According to Variety, financial terms of the transaction were not made public. Founded in 2022 and previously operating under the radar, InterPositive takes a different approach to artificial intelligence than many of its counterparts. Rather than generating AI video content, the company develops AI models built from existing production dailies, giving filmmakers a way to bring machine learning into the postproduction process without surrendering creative authority. The technology supports tasks including mixing, color correction, relighting, and visual effects.
All 16 members of the InterPositive team, spanning engineering, research, and creative disciplines, will transition to Netflix as part of the deal. Affleck will not be joining the company full-time but will take on a senior adviser role, offering guidance on how the tools are applied in real productions.
Affleck has been vocal about the philosophy behind the technology. “We also need to preserve what makes storytelling human, which is judgment. The kind that takes decades to build, experience to hone and that only people can have,” he said.
He added that the tools were designed around the workflows and language familiar to directors and cinematographers, keeping decision-making firmly in human hands.
Netflix leadership framed the acquisition as a win for creators. Chief Content Officer Bela Bajaria said the technology gives partners “more choices, more control and more protection for their vision,” while Chief Product and Technology Officer Elizabeth Stone noted that “InterPositive’s impressive technology is purpose-built for filmmakers and showrunners to work with tools that naturally support their creative visions.”
Affleck expressed enthusiasm about the road ahead. “I couldn’t be happier for this work to continue with the team at Netflix, and look forward to providing the broader creative community with access to what we build and the future we’re working towards together,” he said.
The deal comes shortly after Netflix withdrew from its pursuit of Warner Bros. Discovery’s studios and streaming operations, signaling a strategic pivot toward technology that strengthens the storytelling process rather than bypassing it.
Ben Affleck told you exactly what’s coming and nobody caught it.
At the DealBook Summit, he was asked point blank: could Netflix use AI to create its own James Bond with completely synthetic actors?
His answer started safe. “That’s not possible now.”
