*New details have emerged surrounding the fatal stabbing of acclaimed actor and filmmaker Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele Singer Reiner, revealing that Michele was still alive when their daughter Romy discovered the scene, Showbiz 411 reports.
The killings occurred at the couple’s Brentwood, Los Angeles home on December 14 and are being investigated as a homicide by the Los Angeles Police Department. A source close to the family told Showbiz411 that Romy found her parents inside the residence, where Rob had already died from his injuries. According to the source, Michele was conscious enough to speak and identify who was responsible. “He left us here for dead,” the source says Michelle told Romy.
That statement reportedly led investigators to focus on a family member as a suspect quickly. Their son, Nick Reiner, 32, was taken into custody and is being held without bail in connection with the deaths. Authorities have since confirmed that Nick has been formally charged.
According to ABC News, Nick faces two counts of first-degree murder and is expected to make his first court appearance on Wednesday (Dec. 17). Los Angeles County District Attorney Nathan Hochman announced the charges during a press conference and addressed the complexity of the case. “Prosecuting cases involving family violence are some of the most challenging and heart-wrenching we face because of the intimate and often brutal nature of the crimes,” Hochman said.
The charges carry the possibility of life in prison without parole or the death penalty. Hochman clarified the status of sentencing considerations, stating, “No decision at this point has been made with respect to the death penalty.”
Sources indicate the family had been grappling with Nick’s personal struggles since he was a teenager, including drug addiction and mental health challenges. He worked with his father on the 2016 film “Being Charlie,” which drew from his substance abuse experiences.
TMZ reported that Nick had argued with his parents at Conan O’Brien’s Christmas party on December 13, shortly before the killings. Afterward, sources say he checked into the Pierside Santa Monica hotel, where he allegedly “left a trail of blood behind” him and staff later found his shower “full of blood.”
Law enforcement officials stated that Nick had been living on his parents’ property but was not present when the bodies were discovered. He was later apprehended near the University of Southern California.
Rob Reiner was known for directing and starring in films including “The Princess Bride,” “When Harry Met Sally…,” “Stand By Me,” “This is Spinal Tap,” and “A Few Good Men.” He is survived by his children, Jake, Nick, Romy, and Tracy Reiner, the latter of whom he adopted during his first marriage to Penny Marshall, who passed away in 2018.
