*Dallas Cowboys head coach Brian Schottenheimer revealed during a press conference on Wednesday that Marshawn Kneeland’s girlfriend, Catalina Mancera, is pregnant.
The announcement came a week after the 24-year-old defensive end’s death from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. Schottenheimer shared that the Cowboys created the Marshawn Kneeland Memorial Fund to provide financial support for Catalina and the couple’s unborn child, The Dallas Morning News reports. The fund’s website reads, “The Marshawn Kneeland Memorial Fund is dedicated to preserving Marshawn’s legacy and extending his impact through direct support for his surviving partner and unborn heir.”
“We want to make sure she’s taken care of and the baby is taken care of for the rest of their lives,” Schottenheimer said.
Kneeland’s death was announced by the Dallas Cowboys on Thursday, November 6. “It is with extreme sadness that the Dallas Cowboys share that Marshawn Kneeland tragically passed away this morning,” the team said in a statement. “Marshawn was a beloved teammate and member of our organization. Our thoughts and prayers regarding Marshawn are with his girlfriend Catalina and his family.”
Authorities in Frisco, Texas, confirmed that Kneeland died on Wednesday, November 5, following a police pursuit. According to The Associated Press, state troopers attempted to stop the player for a traffic violation, but he fled, leading officers on a chase before crashing his vehicle and running from the scene.
Dispatch recordings cited by Broadcastify revealed that loved ones had contacted police after receiving alarming messages from Kneeland. One dispatcher reported, “They’re concerned for his welfare,” noting that those close to him feared he intended to harm himself. Another dispatcher said officers had spoken with his girlfriend, who told them, “She’s saying he is armed and has a history of mental illness. And her quote was, ‘He will end it all.’”
Police later confirmed that Kneeland died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound approximately three hours after the crash. His death has left teammates, friends, and fans mourning the loss of a young player whose career and life were tragically cut short.
