*Mariah Carey revealed on Monday that both her mother, Patricia, and her sister, Alison Carey, passed away on the same day over the weekend.
“My heart is broken that I’ve lost my mother this past weekend. Sadly, in a tragic turn of events, my sister lost her life on the same day,” the singer said in a statement, PEOPLE reports.
“I feel blessed that I was able to spend the last week with my mom before she passed,” Carey added. “I appreciate everyone’s love and support and respect for my privacy during this impossible time.”
At this time, no further information, including the causes of death for Patricia and Alison, has been released.
As PEOPLE reports, in her 2020 memoir, “The Meaning of Mariah Carey,” Carey wrote, “Like many aspects of my life, my journey with my mother has been full of contradictions and competing realities. It’s never been only black-and-white — it’s been a whole rainbow of emotions.”

“Our relationship is a prickly rope of pride, pain, shame, gratitude, jealousy, admiration and disappointment,” continued Mariah in the book. “A complicated love tethers my heart to my mother’s.”
The Grammy-winner dedicated her memoir to Patricia.
“And to Pat, my mother, who, through it all, I do believe actually did the best she could,” she wrote. “I will love you the best I can, always.”
Alison sued the singer over the book after Carey claimed her older sister was abusive towards her when they were children.
“When I was 12 years old,” she mentioned in the memoir, “my sister drugged me with Valium, offered me a pinky nail full of cocaine, inflicted me with third-degree burns, and tried to sell me out to a pimp.”
Alison said she suffered emotional distress from the allegations and sought $1.25 million.

As we reported in 2021, Alison stated in her legal docs that Mariah presented no evidence to back up the accusations of abuse. Alison also accused Mimi of making outrageous claims despite knowing her sibling suffered from trauma herself from the alleged abuse she suffered as a child at the hands of their mother. Alison alleged that Patricia subjected her to satanic rituals and sexual activity at a young age; allegations she made when she sued their mother for sexual abuse in 2020.
Mariah wrote in the memoir that it was “emotionally and physically safer for me not to have any contact” with Alison or her brother Morgan.
