*French President Emmanuel Macron and First Lady Brigitte Macron enlisted a U.S. investigative firm, Nardello & Co., to probe far-right podcaster Candace Owens before launching a defamation lawsuit against her.
Filed in July in Delaware Superior Court, the complaint accuses Owens of orchestrating a “campaign of global humiliation” through an eight-part YouTube series, “Becoming Brigitte,” and social media posts, the Advocate reports. The lawsuit claims Owens circulated unfounded accusations, asserting that Brigitte Macron is transgender.
The Macrons’ legal team, led by attorney Thomas Clare, is prepared to testify in Delaware, signaling their commitment to countering Owens’ allegations. The lawsuit also names Candace Owens LLC and website operator GeorgeTom, Inc., citing 22 counts of defamation.
The claims, described as “outlandish, defamatory, and far-fetched fictions,” stem from a conspiracy theory traced back to a 2017 Spanish blog, later amplified in France by far-right activist Xavier Poussard in 2023. Owens first discussed the rumor on her podcast in March 2024 and later featured Poussard in an interview, with Russian state media heavily promoting her series.
The firm also documented her pattern of “transvestigation,” a form of online harassment targeting public figures with false transgender claims. Despite three retraction demands sent between December 2024 and July 2025, Owens persisted, prompting legal action.

Adding to the controversy, Owens revealed on Tucker Carlson’s podcast that President Donald Trump personally urged her to stop promoting the conspiracy theory.
“I saw her up close and she looks like a woman to me,” Trump reportedly said, noting the claims’ emotional toll on Brigitte Macron. Owens, undeterred, responded, “Respectfully, Mr. President, it’s not my fault that he married somebody with a penis,” doubling down on her narrative.
Far-right attorney Robert Barnes posted on X that Owens’ claims are “some of the dumbest, obvious lies one can tell” and predicted she has “0 percent chance of winning in court.”
No trial date has been scheduled.
