*Right-wing commentator Candace Owens has revealed that President Donald Trump personally contacted her, urging her to cease promoting a conspiracy theory about French First Lady Brigitte Macron’s gender.
Speaking on Tucker Carlson’s podcast, Owens disclosed that Trump reached out in February after French President Emmanuel Macron raised the issue during a White House visit, The Independent reports. The call came shortly after a senior White House official initially asked Owens to stop discussing the matter, a request she found offensive and ignored. According to Owens, Trump recounted a conversation with Emmanuel Macron, who inquired about her during discussions related to the Ukraine-Russia conflict.
“He sounded very confused,” Owens said of Trump, quoting him as saying, “I saw her up close and she looks like a woman to me, I had dinner with her at the top of the Eiffel Tower.” She claimed Trump noted the claims were distressing to Brigitte, adding, “She’s old and this is really, really impacting her.”
Owens responded defiantly, stating, “Respectfully, Mr. President, it’s not my fault that he married somebody with a penis,” reiterating the narrative that prompted the Macrons to take legal action. The couple has filed a defamation lawsuit against Owens, her company Candace Owens LLC, and website operator GeorgeTom, Inc., in Delaware Superior Court. The 22-count suit targets Owens’ podcast series, “Becoming Brigitte,” which alleges that Brigitte Macron was born male and stole another person’s identity.
The legal filing accuses Owens of knowingly spreading “outlandish, defamatory, and far-fetched fictions” for fame and profit, despite three retraction demands sent between December 2024 and July 2025. Owens first discussed Trump’s call on her podcast, describing him as complimentary yet puzzled by Macron’s request. “You must be a very powerful person, Candace,” she quoted Trump as saying. She agreed to temporarily scale back her coverage but refused to fully comply.

The lawsuit, as reported by CBS, highlights the “tremendous damage” caused by Owens’ claims, which began circulating in 2021 and gained momentum after she amplified them in March 2024. In a joint statement, the Macrons condemned Owens’ actions: “Ms. Owens’ campaign of defamation was plainly designed to harass and cause pain to us and our families and to garner attention and notoriety. We gave her every opportunity to back away from these claims, but she refused.”
Owens’ spokesperson defended her, arguing that the lawsuit represents a foreign government’s attempt to suppress an American journalist’s First Amendment rights, asserting, “In France, politicians can bully journalists, but this is not France. It’s America.”
