*When we say bassist/singer/writer Lance Vantile Whitfield’s project Freelance is ‘all love,’ we mean that literally. On this slammin’ follow-up to the musician’s debut album Unbossed, every song (co-produced with longtime partner DeYon Dobson) is an overture to a rendezvous encounter straight from the heart and fingers of a monogamous brother in search of that forever link.
No blues. No drama. No beef. Strictly Urban Romance. Impeccably blending Soul and Jazz with a few tasteful splashes of Hip Hop, Lance has crafted a ‘bassfully blissed’ soundtrack for four seasons of almighty ardor.
The just-released second single/animated video is “Holla Dayz,” a jazzy Philly Soul mack track loaded with mass appeal.
The first single was the album’s opening party starter, “All Night.” Other highlights of the generous 15-song stack include “Ain’t No Way” (a midtempo groove with bass upfront, a taste of Wes Montgomery-esque guitar by Michael “Nomad” Ripoll), “How We Do” (wicked lead bass with turntablism over a smoot Hip Hop jazz flow), “Hot Jam” (a club groove reminiscent of Cameo), “Without You” (a midtempo in the vibe of Ron Isley), the mellow “Love Supreme,” and “The Luv I Give Pt. 2” featuring a nice trumpet solo by the ubiquitous Tatiana Tate.
This writer’s favorite is “Run Back,” a clever lyric over a track of shifting textures on which all the very best of LVW comes together divinely (co-written with Lance’s son Ryan Alexander Whitfield a.k.a. “R.A.W.” who also sings here with Karla Mosley).
With Freelance, multi-talented multi-instrumentalist Lance Vantile Whitfield (also a gifted graphic artist) delivers that rare record you can play from beginning to finish and be guaranteed to start and keep your love flame burnin’.
