*Kenan Thompson is defending himself against legal claims from a Los Angeles property owner demanding more than $34,390 in compensation following an allegedly abandoned rental contract.
The “Saturday Night Live” performer is accused of breaching a residential agreement and failing to fulfill financial commitments, based on court filings reviewed by The Daily Mail. According to court records, Thompson signed a one-year residential lease that was set to begin in October 2025, with rent set at $10,250 per month. The contract reportedly required Thompson to continue paying rent until a replacement tenant moved in, a provision the landlord claims is consistent with state law. The lawsuit alleges Thompson violated the agreement shortly after signing it.
The filings state that Thompson later asked to end the lease early, but the landlord maintained that he remained financially responsible. A new tenant eventually rented the property for the remainder of the term at a lower rate of $8,500 per month. Legal documents indicate that Thompson, through his attorney, approved termination of the contract in December while acknowledging that the landlord could still seek compensation for losses tied to the agreement, including unpaid rent and any difference in rental income.

The landlord claims Thompson failed to fully pay rent for November and did not pay rent for December, resulting in $17,425 in unpaid charges. The lawsuit also seeks $15,750 for the rent difference between Thompson’s original rate and the new tenant’s lower payments over nine months. Additional amounts requested include $871 in late fees, $9,594 in brokerage costs, and $1,000 in attorney fees, all allegedly permitted under the lease. The total amount sought accounts for a $10,250 security deposit previously paid by Thompson.
Sources close to Thompson offered a different perspective to TMZ, describing the matter as a contractual disagreement rather than an attempt to avoid payment. They claim Thompson never received access to the property and never occupied it, arguing that there were fundamental issues with how the agreement was carried out.
