*Keke Palmer is set to lead a star-studded ensemble in Boots Riley’s latest comedy, “I Love Boosters,” which follows a group of shoplifters taking on a cutthroat fashion mogul.
Palmer, alongside Naomi Ackie, Taylour Paige, Poppy Liu, and Eiza González as the stylish Velvet Gang, orchestrates a daring heist to steal high-end clothing and resell it at discounted prices, PEOPLE reports.
The film also features LaKeith Stanfield, Will Poulter, Don Cheadle, and Demi Moore, marking Riley’s first feature since the 2018 satirical hit “Sorry to Bother You.” That film earned critical acclaim and won the Independent Spirit Award for Best First Feature. “I Love Boosters” will have its world premiere at SXSW on March 12, before opening in theaters nationwide on May 22. “I’m trying to create a roller coaster ride,” Riley said of his creative process in a 2024 interview with The Believer. He also explained his fascination with morally complex characters:
“It’s more interesting. It’s also a lot of the people I know, maybe on smaller levels. It might be a political organization where suddenly we need to sell all this cocaine so we can get a community center. Or trying to figure out the right path in life. To a certain extent, that’s me,” the filmmaker explained.
“You know, there’s one aspect of my story that’s like, Oh, he was involved in radical organizations from age fourteen. Then there’s the other side of the story. From the age of eleven, I was doing door-to-door sales. I was a party promoter when I was nineteen, finding loopholes for liquor licenses when I was selling [liquor], and kids were running around with alcohol. There were all of those contradictions,” Riley added.
With its mix of comedy, style, and social commentary, “I Love Boosters” continues Riley’s signature approach of blending humor with sharp cultural critique, promising an entertaining ride for audiences ready to follow the Velvet Gang on their fashion-fueled escapades.
