*Karamo Brown has distanced himself from his “Queer Eye” co-stars following a personal conflict that came to light when his mother overheard them speaking about him on a hot mic.
As SandraRose.com reports, the incident prompted Brown to skip interviews promoting Season 10 to focus on his mental well-being. The reality star’s mother overheard the conversation because a production assistant provided her with headphones during a visit to the Netflix set. While the discussion was reportedly not intended as gossip or bullying, it created tension between Karamo and cast members Jonathan Van Ness, Tan France, and Antoni Porowski.
Following the incident, Brown unfollowed all of his co-stars on social media except Bobby Berk. He also withdrew from a scheduled “CBS Mornings” interview with his co-stars, citing concerns about being mistreated. The TV host pulled out less than an hour before the segment. In his place, Gayle King read a letter from Brown explaining his decision.
In a statement to King, Karamo said: “I hope everyone remembers the main theme I have tried to teach them over the past decade, which is to focus on and to protect their mental health/peace from people or a world who seek to destroy it; which is why I can’t be there today.” He cited long-standing emotional strain and experiences of being “bullied” by his fellow cast members as contributing factors.
Brown’s sudden absence left his “Queer Eye” co-stars shocked. “Surprised is a fair understatement,” Porowski told King. “I will say our ‘Queer Eye’ family, we’ve been doing this for almost a decade, which is pretty wild to believe, and families are complicated. And we’re definitely not excluded from that.”
Porowski added, “But I think two things can exist at the same time. And while that is definitely true, we’re also here to showcase the incredible heroes that we have and honor the legacy of this past decade of our lives.”
Jonathan Van Ness praised Brown, noting the importance of meeting others where they are and expressing admiration for his co-star’s approach.
“I would say one thing that I’ve been so honored to learn about Karamo in that time is that we have to meet people we’re they’re at,” he shared.
Following his decision to skip the ‘Today with Jenna & Sheinelle’ interview with the cast, Brown spoke out in a video message: “Just like the themes of this season, I’m modeling what I believe is most important, which I want to remind you all, love yourselves and protect yourselves. That’s why I’m here at home and not there,” he said.
