*Senator Josh Hawley is pushing a new bill that would send $600 rebate checks to Americans, specifically targeting “Trump blue-collar voters.”
Introduced as the American Worker Rebate Act of 2025 on July 28, the legislation aims to distribute tariff revenues as refundable tax credits, The Independent reports. “We’re on track to raise over $150 billion from tariff revenues this year alone,” Hawley said on Steve Bannon’s War Room podcast, proposing to return a portion to working-class families.
The plan offers at least $600 per adult and dependent child, with larger families receiving more. “It’d be $600 for every adult and child, so if you’ve got a big family, you’re gonna get more,” Hawley explained. However, the rebates phase out for singles earning over $75,000 and joint filers above $150,000, explicitly excluding wealthy “hedge fund guys” and “Democrat donors of Wall Street.”
Hawley’s rhetoric frames the rebates as a reward for Trump supporters, claiming, “This is going to the Trump blue collar voters, the people who Joe Biden crushed.” Hawley argues the checks would support workers struggling with costs for gas and groceries, blaming the prior administration’s policies.
Tariffs, which fund the rebates, raise import costs for U.S. companies, often passed to consumers through higher prices. The Tax Foundation notes that Trump’s tariffs could increase food costs, with $163 billion of the $221 billion in 2024 food imports affected. While companies stockpiled goods to delay price hikes, rising costs are expected soon.
Critics argue the rebates, reminiscent of COVID-19 stimulus checks, could fuel inflation. Opinion writer Josh Barro remarked on X, “The stimulus will continue until inflation improves.” Others suggest using the funds to reduce the national debt, which grew by $3.4 trillion under Trump’s policies, per the Congressional Budget Office.
Hawley insists the plan honors working-class voters. “Well, you wouldn’t give it to everybody, you’d give it to the working people,” he told Bannon, emphasizing support for “our people” who backed Trump’s agenda.
