*Halle Berry is speaking candidly about a period of intentional celibacy that followed after her three marriages, describing it as a necessary reset.
After navigating multiple high-profile relationships, the actress said she made a deliberate decision to step away from dating and focus inward. That pause, she explained, ultimately changed how she viewed herself and love.
“I was solo and celibate for four years,” Berry, 59, told The Times. “I had to really sit myself down and be alone and grow and reflect and realize my value.” During that stretch, Berry said she confronted the possibility that a romantic partner might not return to her life and found peace in that outcome.
“I had decided if the right person doesn’t come, I will be alone. And that’s OK,” she said. “I’m enough by myself. I’ve got my children. I have my career. That’s more than enough. I have an embarrassment of riches.”

Berry was first married to former MLB star David Justice from 1993 until 1997. She later wed singer Eric Benét, and they split in 2004. Berry married French actor Olivier Martinez in 2013, and they called it quits three years later. The former couple share son Maceo, now 12. The Oscar-winner also has a 17-year-old daughter named Nahla, whose father is Canadian model Gabriel Aubry.
Reflecting on her past, Berry said her earlier relationships played a role in preparing her for the partnership she has today. She began dating musician Van Hunt in 2020 and believes the personal work she did beforehand was essential. “I had to go through fire and burn to get to the point of appreciating a person like him,” she said. “I was a moth to a flame. I no longer am that person.”
Beyond relationships, Berry addressed the frustration of being defined by appearance rather than her work. “I die a thousand deaths. It becomes a hard compliment to accept,” she said. While she responds politely, Berry made clear the sentiment wears thin, adding, “I’ve worked really hard as an actor, and still to be reduced to a beautiful face, it’s like, ‘Hey, wait a minute.’ Come on.”
