*Halle Berry made a dazzling return to the Met Gala on Monday night, stepping onto fashion’s biggest stage for the first time in eight years, and she did so in unforgettable style. Wearing a custom LaQuan Smith gown that embraced elegance and edge, Berry embodied this year’s Met Gala theme: Superfine: Tailoring Black Style.
The 2025 Costume Institute Benefit celebrated Black dandyism and its influence on fashion, inspired by Monica L. Miller’s seminal book Slaves to Fashion: Black Dandyism and the Styling of Black Diasporic Identity. Guests were asked to interpret the dress code “Tailored for You,” resulting in a night of bold, personalized looks, and Berry delivered one of the evening’s most talked-about ensembles.
Designed by Smith, the dress paired sheer mesh with shimmering black panels, creating an illusion of near-nudity while remaining intricately detailed and masterfully constructed. After the gala, Berry took to Instagram to reflect on the experience, writing: “I am so honored to have been a muse for @laquan_smith, who designed a gown that rose to meet the depth and strength of this year’s theme.”
She went on to praise the craftsmanship behind the piece, which required 1,455 hours to complete.
“LaQuan crafted a piece that felt like a poem — whispers of old New York, the shimmer of broken city lights, the unapologetic grace of Black Dandyism, and the boldness of claiming space in today’s fashion narrative. To wear this gown was to feel powerful, purposeful, and proud. Thank you, LaQuan, for creating something so breathtaking — and for allowing me to bring it to life.”

Berry revealed to E! News that Smith created two dresses for her, and she left the final decision to him.
“He showed me some sketches. I chose two that I really liked, so he made two dresses,” Berry shared.
“The dresses were gorgeous,” she continued. “I could hardly choose. I asked LaQuan, ‘Which one would you like me to wear?’ So, I chose his favorite.”
Hosted by Anna Wintour and co-chaired by Colman Domingo, Lewis Hamilton, A$AP Rocky, and Pharrell Williams, the 2025 Met Gala once again proved to be a night where art, culture, and fashion collide, and Halle Berry’s return was one of its most memorable moments.
