*Starz has announced that it is moving forward with “The Book of Jose,” a scripted series about the life of rapper Joseph “Fat Joe” Cartagena.
The show will center on Fat Joe’s evolution from a Bronx kid to an international icon. It will chronicle his rise from humble beginnings to fame, highlighting the obstacles he faced both personally and professionally. The pilot episode will be written by Kenya Barris, the creator of “Black-ish,” and Dominic Colón, per Deadline.
Jessy Terrero will direct the pilot and also serve as an executive producer. Other executive producers include Barris, Colón, Cartagena, Terrero, and E. Brian Dobbins, with Barris producing through Khalabo Ink Society. Adam Kassan will oversee the project for Khalabo Ink Society, while Dobbins will produce through Artists First. BET Studios, under the leadership of Sabrina Eisenstadt, is handling project oversight.
In addition to “The Book of Jose,” Barris is working on a new comedy series for Hulu titled “Group Chat.” The show is based on La La Anthony’s bestselling book “The Love Playbook: Rules for Love, Sex, and Happiness” and follows five successful women in their 40s navigating life in Los Angeles. Despite their picture-perfect appearances, they share a secret group chat that reveals their true, often messy, lives. The project marks the first from Kim Kardashian’s first-look deal with 20th Television.
Anthony and Kardashian are also on board as executive producers, alongside Barris and Adam Kassan.
