* Faizon Love is a free man again, but his legal and financial troubles are far from over.
The “Elf” actor, 58, walked out of a Hillsborough County, Florida, jail on June 19 after spending three days behind bars on contempt of court charges. Authorities initially arrested him in California, where he spent 16 days in custody. They then transported him to Florida to face the outstanding case, PEOPLE reports.
His ex, Tiffany Lee, reopened a declaration-of-paternity case against him on June 11. She claims Love owes her close to $250,000 in court-ordered payments he has not made in years. Lee told the court that Love once said she “wasn’t going to get a dime.” She also claims he bragged about quitting work to dodge his financial obligations.
Love arrived at his Friday hearing in a wheelchair, telling the judge he cannot afford the $2,500 monthly payments. His only steady income, he said, comes from roughly $10,000 in annual “Elf” royalty checks.

His attorney, Glen Lansky, pushed back on the narrative taking shape around his client. “I think he wants to act,” Lansky told the court. “He wants to write. He has contacts in the business, and hopefully he’s able to get more gigs.”
Lansky also revealed that Love had previously lived out of his car during a stretch of homelessness. “That’s how the mighty have fallen,” the attorney said. Lansky clarified to PEOPLE that Love currently stays with a friend in California and is no longer without housing.
The judge set a July 1 deadline for Love to file a financial statement confirming he cannot meet the payments. Lansky plans to submit a petition to modify the child support order.
