That man was Eddie Murphy.
Like countless comics of his generation, Lawrence idolized Murphy, whose groundbreaking work on “Saturday Night Live” and the blockbuster success of “Raw” had turned him into comedy’s biggest superstar.
So when a young Lawrence finally found himself backstage at an event after recently moving to California, he knew exactly what he wanted.
Just one picture.

Instead, he got one word.
“No.”
The Picture That Never Happened
Lawrence shared the story during Netflix’s “The AFI Life Achievement Award: A Tribute to Eddie Murphy,” recalling the moment he finally worked up the courage to approach his comedy hero.
“Eddie Murphy introduced us to comedy in rock-star fashion,” Lawrence said.
Murphy was leaning against a wall looking impossibly cool when Lawrence introduced himself.
“I said, ‘Eddie Murphy, I’m Martin Lawrence. Brother, can I take a picture with you?'”
Murphy looked him straight in the eyes.”No.”
Just like that.
“My face was cracked,” Lawrence joked, drawing laughter from the audience.
Denied by the biggest comedian in America, Lawrence settled for taking a picture with “Raw” director Robert Townsend instead.
At the time, it probably felt like one of those stories every struggling entertainer collects on the road to success.
Life, however, had a much funnier script in mind.
The Plot Twist Nobody Saw Coming
Fast-forward a few decades.
Martin Lawrence became Martin Lawrence.
The two comedy icons starred together in “Boomerang” and later reunited in “Life,” building not only a successful professional relationship but also a genuine friendship.
Then Hollywood delivered the kind of twist no screenwriter could improve upon.
Murphy’s son, Eric, married Lawrence’s daughter, Jasmin.
Suddenly, the two comedians weren’t just colleagues.
They were family.
And when Eric and Jasmin welcomed their daughter, Ari Skye, Murphy and Lawrence entered an entirely new chapter together.
Grandfatherhood.
Standing on stage during the AFI tribute, Lawrence couldn’t resist revisiting the old story.
“Eddie, you know I love you,” he joked. “Because now I can get all the pictures I want with him. Because we’re in-laws now. Ain’t that right, Eddie?”
Murphy could only laugh.
When Life Writes the Best Punchlines
Murphy has often spoken about the importance of family, and while accepting the AFI Life Achievement Award, he reflected on how much his life had changed.
“I just had my first grandson, and my third granddaughter, and I just turned 65,” Murphy said. “I feel like it’s raining blessings on me this month.”
Looking toward his family seated in the audience, the comedy legend grew emotional.
“Just looking out and seeing all my family, all my kids, my beautiful wife, seeing all my different people that I worked with, it’s just really filled up.”
For Murphy, the evening celebrated a remarkable career.
For Lawrence, it offered the perfect opportunity to remind everyone that sometimes life has a better sense of humor than comedians do.
Years ago, he walked away without the picture he wanted.
Today, he probably doesn’t have to ask.
Family reunions have a way of solving that.
